Pre-Conference Activities - Wednesday, April 12, 2023
Girls Experience Mining Volunteer Event: 8 AM - 3 PM
Unfortunately, this event has been cancelled
Volunteer at the “Girls Experience Mining” Day run by CAT for local 7th and 8th grade students at the local schools experience mine machinery & equipment, simulators, and other mining activities. A “job fair” will be held at lunch where each company or volunteer representative can explain what their company does and what jobs they are looking for to inspire the youth.
Who: Open to all conference attendees who would like to volunteer!
Where: Outside at CAT's Tinaja Hills – 45 minutes south of the Tucson Convention Center. Shuttle bus will leave the TCC at 7 AM and return at 4pm. You can volunteer for a smaller portion of the day, but you must provide your own transportation. Lunches will be provided to volunteers.

Advisory Council Meeting: 4 - 6 PM
This event is invitation only
Collaboration time with WIM Corporate member company leads and the WIM chapter leadership.
Who: By Invitation Only.
Where: Hexagon's Downtown Tucson Office, 5-minute walk from TCC.
Virtual and In person component will be available to ACC members, be on the lookout for a separate meeting invitation with instructions on how to join the meeting.

Conference Day 1 Activities - Thursday, April 13, 2023
The Main Event! 9 AM - 5 PM
Join an exciting day of panels, speakers, and a workshop focused on how to improve Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in the mining industry. There will be plenty of time to NETWORK as well with our interactive round table discussions following each segment of the day.
Who: Open to all conference attendees!
Where: Tucson Convention Center “The Meeting Rooms”.
Cost: Included in registration fee.
Dinner & Networking 6 - 9 PM
Includes a catered dinner buffet and live entertainment at the beautiful, historic Pima County Courthouse Courtyard. The evening entertainment will include tours led by museum staff and docents of the Alfie Norville Gem & Mineral Museum. Awards ceremony will be held during the event.

Tours have PPE requirements - be on the lookout for your specific tour to know what to bring. All tours will have closed toe shoes and long pants as a minimum requirement, some tours need hardhat, safety glasses and high viz vest (some loaner PPE is available for those traveling).

Option 2 - Personal and Professional Development Workshops
As an alternative to the mine tours, two workshops are being offered at the Tucson Convention Center on Friday.
Workshop 1 is a 3 hour personal development workshop hosted by Brooks and Nelson (see details below).
Workshop 2 is the BRIMM 101 class, modified for our conference that will provide you with that initial certification. This class will be 6 hours in length on Friday with additional class work to be done virtually after the event (see details below).
Breakfast and lunch are provided for both workshops.

Workshop 1: Conviction, Courage, and Confidence: Activating Your Leadership for Change
As members of the WiM community, we are called to fulfill WiM’s mission to position mining as an equitable, sustainable, and reputable industry that fosters trust and respect. Yet harnessing the leadership to be the voice of this mission can be challenging at times.
This highly interactive workshop is designed to help you create impact in the mining industry. The session begins with activities to reveal your leadership archetype. In small groups, you’ll then identify unique opportunities to stand as a change maker and encourage bystanders to join your lead. You’ll hear about research that dispels the myth that women simply need confidence to advance their leadership and careers. Instead, you’ll learn tactical strategies to help you to take risks and develop the support networks to lead change, whether you feel confident or not. The session will end with you drafting a plan for increasing your sphere of influence, whether that is within yourself, your team, your organization, or the industry at large.
By attending this workshop, you will:

Workshop 2: BRIMM 101 - Introduction to Mineral and Exploration Economics
BRIMM 101 “Introduction to Mineral and Exploration Economics” provides core concepts to face current challenges in the mining industry. The course ties together sustainability, exploration, mineral processing, and finance, into a common economic thesis. Our goal is to provide practical tools to boost your leadership skills while addressing project management, collaboration across silos, and sustainable productivity.
This course is the foundation of BRIMM Executive Micro Certificate in Economic Leadership for Mining.
After completing this course, the participants will be able to:

Demonstrate an understanding of how to structure change at an operating asset

Pitch the shift using the BRIMM goalposts in quantitative, qualitative, and emotional terms

Understand how to economically derisk an exploration project from a desktop using checklists

Demonstrate understanding of a mining value chain and options from an economic perspective at a mine site

Tie sustainability into decision making

Shift how to holistically view the industry and break some silos

Better sell your personal brand, IP, and core message
Upon attending the full day of the course at WIM USA 2023 Conference and completing two homework exercises (pass/fail) you will be issued with a digital credential. There will also be two (optional) online techno-economic modeling sessions run the week after the in-person class for attendees.
This executive education is through the Bradshaw Research Institute for Minerals and Mining (BRIMM) at the University of British Columbia.

There are numerous great local eateries for you to have an enjoyable dinner in the southwest.
